EDITORIAL

Communications as the key element to interchange experiences was the main aspect developed in the meeting of the Copper Promotion Centers held last April in the city of Phoenix, Arizona (USA).  Information on the meeting will be presented in this second bulletin of the year.

This issue also presents an interesting note explaining the excellent work opportunities of using copper applications.

We continue working actively on the standardization issue of the electric and pipeline areas.  Additionally, we are participating in the development of labeling regulations for electrical engines.  The same effort is also performed in Colombia.

With respect to training, seminars and courses have been carried out in the region.  Interesting materials were distributed during said events.

Our section “Copper in the Food Industry” includes a note on copper utensils and the benefits of using these implements in cooking.

Copies of the “Copper Encyclopedia” [Enciclopedia del Cobre] have been distributed as donations to the main universities of the region.

Finally, we take this opportunity to transmit the invitation to participate in the Latin American Contest “The Spirit of Copper”.  All industrial designers, interior designers, architects and students from the last years of studies of said professions are invited to participate.  The prize giving ceremony will take place next October in the city of Buenos Aires.

We thank you in advance for your kind attention and hope the information provided in this issue is useful for you.

PROCOBRE IN THE WORLD

Copper conects life

The annual meeting of Directors from 23 Copper Promotions Center and the International Copper Association (ICA) was held last April in the city of Phoenix, Arizona (USA).

The main theme of the meeting was the communications issue as a key element to interchange positive experiences of using copper applications and alloys.  These interchange allows saving resources and time when adjusted for and implemented in each country.

Each Center presented examples of promotion considering standardization, training and preparation of technical and promotional materials.  Projects such as the Smart Wired House in Australia and the US, Solar Energy in Germany and Brazil, and Copper Pipelines for Gas worldwide, among others, are already oriented to provide an integral solution by offering copper applications of quality and guaranty as well as training to qualified professionals for an efficient service.

Work opportunities using Copper Applications

Copper is used in a variety of applications in many areas such as the electronic, sanitary and industrial electric among others.  It is also related to health due to the benefits it represents for human beings.  There are traditional and new uses which require the participation of highly-qualified technicians.  Thus, work opportunities are directly related to training that will allow obtaining new professional options and therefore, more working alternatives.

Training efforts are being made in each one of our areas of action.  Nowadays, the equipment is more sensitive, has more electronic parts and needs greater protection, obliging users to install ground connections.  However, is there enough number of technicians?

The most demanding projects require copper pipes for the water, gas and cooling installations.  Project developers need to hire qualified technicians to make these installations and satisfy the demand caused by the growing trend of using copper pipes in the gas installations of buildings.

If we add value to the copper applications already known by providing an efficient service with duly trained professionals included to the copper’s advantages to health we will obtain a strong and competitive product.

ORIGINAL APPLICATIONS

Copper in the Food Industry

The best cooks agree in recognizing the efficiency and comfort of using copper-made kitchen containers and utensils.  This metal allows the uniform dissemination of heat, preventing the risk of reheating by areas, i.e., all points are equally hot.

Likewise, copper has an important role in the cookery chemistry: vegetables keep their brilliant green color and prevents blackening caused by containers manufactured with other metals.  It also guarantees a high level of hygiene in the food’s preparation phase and cooking due to its bactericide properties.
